Guldberg School is located in the densely populated district of Nørrebro in Copenhagen. The district is characterized by a high building density and a low number of public spaces and outdoor areas. The project involves a complete renovation of the school’s outdoor areas. The area can be used by schools as well as the public.
The concept for the outdoor areas was conceived through a long series of workshops with users and local residents. The square’s equipment invites people to move and relax and at the same time provides protection and a barrier designed as urban space fixtures that can used for leisure and play.
The design is based on the idea that children play in sequences, and the outdoor area is composed of a ’path-sequence’ and a ’the floor is made of lava-sequence’, both forming a series of activity areas. Both sequences contain several loops, which allows for maximum variation, and help give the schoolyard its unique shape. Here are many opportunities to play and exercise at the same time.
NORD Architects has been facilitator throughout the involvement process and is the lead consultant on the design and renovation of the outdoor areas.
