Nord has a profound focus on the transformation of our existing buildings. Transformation is one of the key elements to supporting a lower co2-emissions and respecting the planetary boundaries in the building industry that currently is responsible for too much for the emissions.
Additive transformation turns our attention towards the values of heritage and existing qualities in the built environment. We need to reuse, recycle, and upcycle constructions and materials, and adapt buildings to new functions whenever possible.
We utilise the huge potential of transformation when working with existing buildings. For almost a decade Nord have transformed buildings for the Danish Building Authority (Bygningsstyrelsen), where we have been a part of transforming up to 100,000 m2 into new functions meeting the demands from several different public clients and users.
Through rigorous analysis of the existing we propose new uses and add-ons that can elevate buildings, their construction, atmosphere and cultural history that can enrich our environments. The existing and site-specific becomes a new driver for our view on history and can inform an identity that we all feel enriched by.
We match the client’s needs with the building’s potential and advise on how to transform the building into a new typology with new workflows, activities and expressions.

Case, Multi-User Office Space: We analyse the building’s potential to be transformed or modernized according to new demands and needs. We suggest different scenarios and advise for the best options.
Case, Gastro Academy: The existing building mass is a bank of historical aesthetics that we can revive and update to suit contemporary needs with transformed characteristics.
Case, DTU Risø: We keep existing buildings and campus alive by renewing, transforming and upgrading for high standard performance in research facilities at DTU Risø.
